When I was in China I found this beautiful round piece of spinach jade that has been cut out with the Chinese long life symbol in the center and carved with cut outs in the shape if two phoenix facing each other on the top. There is also a decorative design around the edges. The piece is carved the same on both sides. The detail of the carving is exquisite.
I have beaded the jade with deep green jade beads that complement the carved jade piece. It is finished it with a 18K gold vermeil hook clasp. The jade carving is 2” in diameter and the necklace is 18” around.
The phoenix, a mythical bird, is the emblem of the Empress and of beauty. It only appears in time of peace and prosperity. It is symbolic of prosperity, rich harvests, and beauty. The phoenix ranks second of the four supernatural creatures, the dragon being the first, the unicorn third and the tortoise fourth. A train of small birds is always in attendance when the phoenix flies. A pair of phoenix means happiness and is associated with buried treasure.
Worn by Imperial families for centuries, jade is a very spiritual stone. It has been called the jewel of heaven, the stone of immortality, a symbol of purity and is believed to embody the five cardinal virtues: charity, modesty, courage, justice and wisdom. From cloudy white to golden brown, light to dark green, to rare lavender, this most highly prized Asian stone is of many shades. Jade is treasured for its magical powers to increase life span, cure all ailments and ward off evil spirits.
